Engineering Research and COVID-19

CAE Fellows have been providing leadership in a variety of ways to help tackle the COVID-19 pandemic.  Some examples are below. Please also see resources and stories from the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.


September 27 – Mike Carter, FCAE, contributes to “A little engineering, a lot of customer service: What it will take to fix COVID-19 test lineups” | CBC News

September 22 – Milos R. Popovic, FCAE, works with Toronto’s smart textile company Myant Inc. addressing the need for remote care during COVID-19 pandemic through wearable tech | Toronto Rehabilitation Institute

September 1 – A University of Toronto Engineering team, including Javad Mostaghimi, FCAE, and Mohini Sain, FCAE, are developing a new way to coat minute particles of copper onto the inside of fabrics, such as those used in face masks. August 19 –  Mary Wells, FCAE, Dean at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo, and other Canadian engineers have adapted their research to develop COVID-specific diagnostic, treatment and tracking solutions | Vancouver Sun

August 11 – Sridhar (Sri) Krishnan, FCAE,  Associate Dean of Research in Ryerson University’s Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, has developed a ‘covidascope’, an app that monitors COVID-19 health vitals. It tracks vitals like cough, heart rate, breathing effort and oxygen level | Ryerson University

August 5 – Carl-Eric Aubin, FCAE, Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal and Executive Director of the Institut TransMedTech de Montréal, has been working to ensure the safety of those practicing dentistry, ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology during COVID-19 | Polytechnique Montréal 

July 21 – Ishwar Puri, FCAE, on his work in COVID-19 technology and the importance of an adaptable research culture | McMaster University

July 14 – Sushanta Mitra, FCAE, is working with Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN) on research to develop a coating that will kill the COVID-19 virus immediately upon contact with any surface | University of Waterloo
