December 6 is a somber day for engineers in Canada as we reflect on the 14 lives lost in 1989, women targeted because they were seeking to pursue a career in engineering or to help others in doing so. It is a stark reminder of the destructive effects of hatred, prejudice and social stigma that can lash out at targeted groups if they are not actively countered by all of us, whenever we cross them. Today we remember the victims and their families, every day we must work to make the profession safe for all of those who want to help build a better world.
