CAE News for the week of 24 September

On a weekly basis, the CAE compiles news of interest to the organization and its members, and makes it publicly available on our website. The CAE works to highlight emerging issues in which engineering has a role as well as promote recognition of engineering excellence and innovation.

Engineering professor elected to Royal Society of Canada

Kudos to University of Windsor Professor Hoda ElMaraghy, FCAE, on her election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.  She was amongst the 8 Fellows of the CAE who were honoured this cycle.

2018 Greenhouse Gas Progress Report

Dianne Saxe, Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, released the 2018 Greenhouse Gas Progress Report on September 25, 2018 and can be found here.

The report includes the latest information about GHG emissions in Ontario, the impacts of climate change and recommendations for a new climate change plan. An appendix to the report is a study titled “Minimum Cost Strategies for GHG Mitigation for Ontario to 2030, and to 2050” which is a follow-up to the CAE-led Trottier Energy Future Project (TEFP). This study co-authored by Kathleen Vaillancourt, Ken Ogilvie and Oskar Sigvaldason, examined pathways for meeting GHG emissions reduction targets in 2030, and in 2050.

The pathways were modeled using minimum cost energy-GHG reduction solutions for meeting both growing demands of an expanding economy, and for satisfying progressively stringent GHG mitigation requirements. The approach used was an extension of the methodology developed from the earlier TEFP study and the opportunities for mitigation included a range of technology options, with associated costs, for every sector.

The results demonstrated that achieving the targets would require transformative changes in Ontario’s entire energy system, including:

  • Moving Ontario’s energy mix away from its current dependence on fossil fuels and replacing it with low-carbon electrification of the economy;
  • Accelerating measures for significant GHG emissions reductions from energy conservation and efficiency improvements;
  • Major transformation of the transportation sector that would include electrification of cars, light duty vehicles, freight transport and expansion of urban and inter-urban public transportation systems;
  • Replacing natural gas fueled space heating and hot water and steam production in buildings with electricity and biofuels;
  • A major shift to the use of electric motors for motive power and production of thermal energy using electricity and biofuels within the industrial sector; and
  • Extensive carbon retention measures would also be important including afforestation, improved forest management, and the production of long-lived wood products as building materials.

Speaking Opportunity – PAGSE “Bacon and Eggheads”

Thank you to Richard Boudreault, FCAE, for volunteering to sit on the PAGSE Bacon and Eggheads Committee.  The Partnership Group for Science and Engineering (PAGSE) is an umbrella group of 25+ National science and engineering organizations, including the CAE, working in partnership with the Canadian Museum of Nature.  One of their main activities is a monthly speaker series on Parliament Hill called “Bacon and Eggheads”. They invite scientists and engineers with excellent communication skills to give a seminar to parliamentarians on timely and cutting edge topics.  Any CAE Fellows who wish to be considered for this program should contact Kevin Goheen at kgoheen@cae-acg.ca.  Presentations from individuals outside academy would be particularly welcome as the hope is to have the sectors more evenly balanced going forward.
