CAE News for the week of 19 November

On a weekly basis, the CAE compiles news of interest to the organization and its members, and makes it publicly available on our website. The CAE works to highlight emerging issues in which engineering has a role as well as promote recognition of engineering excellence and innovation.

CAE Fellows honoured at 2018 Ontario Professional Engineers Awards

CAE Fellows David Lapp and John Bandler were prize winners at the 2018 Ontario Professional Engineers Awards.  David was honoured for his work in creating the PIEVC Protocol, a climate sustainability tool adopted internationally. John won the Professional Engineers Gold Medal for the invention of “space mapping,” a methodology that has transformed microwave technology.

International Geosynthetics Society Mercer Lectures

Professor Kerry Rowe, FCAE, of Queens University will deliver the International Geosynthetics Society Mercer Lectures about the use of geosynthetics in construction on soft soils. Professor Rowe will lecture at three major conferences in Iceland, South Africa and the USA, in 2019 and 2020.

Inspired by the WikiProject Women Scientists #WomeninSTEM, we recently asked Drew Wilson, FCAE, who has an interest in engineering history, to write a series of articles about the women who have served as President of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.

University of British Columbia ‘s 2018 Global Citizenship Award

Dr. Nemy Banthia, FCAE, was the recipient of the 2018 Global Citizenship Award by the University of British Columbia’s alumni association.  The award recognizes Dr. Banthia’s dedication to improving the lives of people in marginalized communities through his work to develop advanced infrastructure innovations in answer to challenges facing remote and rural regions of Canada and India. Dr. Banthia is a Professor, Distinguished University Scholar and Senior Canada Research Chair in Infrastructure Rehabilitation at UBC. He is also the CEO and Scientific Director of the India-Canada Centre for Innovative Multidisciplinary Partnerships to Accelerate Community Transformation and Sustainability (IC-IMPACTS).
